What is this metric used for?

The Geographic Protection allows you to see which countries have activity around the technology you are evaluating.

By analyzing the protected countries of patent families, you can visualize the main markets where there is activity around the technology. Moreover, you will identify areas where the technology is exploding and where it is not present or reclining. Areas free from exploitation will appear.

Furthermore, most companies file their first patent filings where their R&D is carried out. The analysis of these first filings makes it very easy to identify the key countries in terms of research and thus where it will be important to protect well through patent filings.

How is the graphic build?

The graph above associates the volumes of protected patents (and still in force) by country over the last 10 years on one hand, and first applications on the other. The graph shows the first 5 countries.

The graph below includes:

The Protected patent graph shows the volumes of protected patents by country over the last 10 years: it is based on the number of patent families on the topic by country (top 10) over the last 10 years

The First fillings graph shows the volumes of first filings related to the topic by country over the last 10 years:  it is based on the number of first patent filings on the topic by country (top 10).

The Best Accelerations graph shows the countries with the strongest acceleration in terms of volume of protected patents over the last year in the top 30 countries. The acceleration is calculated between the last 2 complete years.
